Engineered stone such as those used in kitchen benchtops contains particularly high levels of silica but sandstone, granite, shale, slate, aggregates, mortar and concrete also contain significant amounts of silica. Crystalline silica dust, such as that created when the above products are processed, is hazardous when inhaled. It can lead to a number of medical issues including the lung disease silicosis.
Businesses must provide health monitoring for workers carrying out ongoing work with exposure to respirable crystalline silica. At a minimum this monitoring should include:

- collection of demographic, medical and occupational history
- records of personal exposure
- standardised respiratory questionnaire
- standardised respiratory function tests, for example, FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC, and
- chest X-Ray full PA view (baseline and high risk workers only).
